What are semi-precious stones? Everything you need to know before choosing a piece of jewelry

When someone asks me what a pair of earrings is made of, I often reply: “They have semiprecious stones.” And almost always the next question comes:

“What exactly does that mean?”

It's a very common question. For a long time, the term semiprecious stone has been used to refer to natural minerals that, while not diamonds, rubies, sapphires, or emeralds, stand out for their beauty, colors, and unique characteristics.

What I like most about them is precisely that: no two are exactly alike.

Nature does not make copies

If you observe two natural stones of the same type, you will see small differences between them.

One may have a slightly more intense hue. Another a different vein. Even the luster can change depending on how the light hits it.

And that's not a defect.

It's the best proof that you are looking at a natural material.

When I assemble a piece of jewelry, I try to make the two stones in a pair of earrings harmonize with each other, but they will never be identical. For me, that small difference is part of the charm of a handmade piece.

Are they better than other materials?

Not necessarily.

Each material has its advantages, which is why I like to combine them.

In some collections, I use semiprecious stones.

In others, glass, artisanal ceramics, or freshwater pearls.

The important thing is not that one material is "better" than another, but to choose the one that best fits the design I have in mind.

Some pieces need the transparency of glass.

Others gain personality thanks to the texture of ceramics.

And there are designs where a natural stone provides just the balance I was looking for.

Why does each stone look different?

Because nature has been doing its work for millions of years.

The veins, the small variations in color, or the transparencies are formed during that process.

That's why I like to check each bead one by one before I start assembling a piece of jewelry.

Each design ends up being a small combination of colors, shapes, and textures that will not be exactly repeated.

Choosing a piece of jewelry is also choosing a material

Some people look for vibrant colors.

Others prefer soft tones that can be combined with any outfit.

And there are those who fall in love with a piece simply because a stone reminds them of the sea, a trip, or a special moment.

I think that's one of the most beautiful things about handmade jewelry.

We don't always choose them for their price or fashion.

Many times we choose them because, without really knowing why, we feel that this piece speaks a little about us.

Beauty lies in imperfection

We live surrounded by objects manufactured to be exactly alike.

Perhaps that's why I like to work with materials that retain small differences.

An unexpected vein.

A color change.

A slightly different shape.

These are details that I cannot and do not want to eliminate.
